Can you see an American kid coming up with this Excuse

From the Mainichi Daily News:

Five teenage boys have been arrested for swindling elderly people out of a combined 15 million yen by posing as their grandchildren, Tokyo police said Wednesday. The boys aged 18 to 19, including a metropolitan high school student, are accused of fraud. The five admitted that they had defrauded elderly people out of 25 million yen, and spent the money on staying at plush hotels in Tokyo and expensive dinners.

"Elderly people living in rural areas often save large amounts of money in their closets. We defrauded them in a bid to use such money to prop up the economy," one of them was quoted as telling investigators. Their names are being withheld under the Juvenile Law.
